Life Coaching Industry Secrets Unveiled

"And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." Romans 8:32 NLT
...

It is my heart to help you become better acquainted with the Christian coaching industry and you really can't do that until you understand the life coaching industry.  To do this we will remove some smoke and mirrors.  If you are new to coaching, Christian coaching specifically, you need to know what you should look for in your training and your career.

I know already there will be those who won't like my candor but this isn't the first time I may take heat over giving you the truth and probably won't be the last.  So here goes ...

Who should get coach training, certification and why?

If you would like to become really good at coaching, if you'd like more understanding of how coaching sessions actually work, methods and models as well as what to do in each section then it's an excellent idea to get coach training.

If you have been informally coaching for some time and feel that it is now finally time to add a credential to your name, to validate your work, now may be an excellent time to get certified.

Will clients ask whether you were certified?

The answer is no. Much like my coaching colleagues in other niches including Christian Mickelson, Milana Leshinsky, Ali Brown, Tony Robbins and others, I will tell you that not one client has asked me if I am certified. Not even one. Mind you, I have been coaching informally since I was in my 20s and formally for over 12 years now, and not one client has asked.

I will tell you though, who has asked me. Other coaches, specifically those who belong to secular associations.  To this day, I maintain that I care more about what God thinks than what men think, so the opinions of those who are misinformed are of no consequence to me nor should they be to you, if you REALLY truly want to serve God.

Here is a secret that others will probably not tell you. There is long-standing indoctrination and ongoing propaganda disseminated by certain coaching organizations and their affiliated coaching schools and members to tell you that training by an "XYZ accredited" school is essential if you hope to succeed. Nothing could be further from the truth, but unfortunately the deception continues.  Worse yet, the same information has made its way into Christian coaching circles.  So, proceed with caution if you hear this.

I believe it is vital for Christian coaches to get sound, biblically-based training that is not integrated with secular or new age thinking. When I began my coaching career this type of training was nonexistent and it is still rare today. This is why I created the original CCLC training, and then the 2.0 version in 2009, which is our gold standard.  We guarantee that all of our CCLC (Christian Life Coach certification) training fits this model.

There are important reasons to get trained and board certified but they may not be what you think.

"PCCCA Board Certification is intended to be an outward, verifiable sign of your abilities and byproduct of your training, rather than the sole purpose of it."

You will likely save yourself years in time to get streamlined training that coaches you, teaches you my 10 Christian Coaching Proficiencies© and includes the business and marketing essentials. Time is the one resource that is limited for each of us and non-renewable. Once it is gone, it's gone.

As believers, we must provide services with excellence and we can only do this if we are trained and knowledgeable. This is our obligation to the God we serve. Certification is an outward sign of our abilities and byproduct of this training.

Most of us who would like to be in the coaching profession, start out insecure about our abilities. (And, we really should not experiment on our clients until we eventually get it right.) After all the clients' lives and potential outcomes are at stake. We have an obligation to each client to offer the best service possible.

Here is one of THE BEST reasons to get trained and certified:

On graduation, I can't tell you how often I have heard a newly certified coach tell me, "My entire life improved when I started training and this was worth it even if I never coach others!"  (It doesn't get any better than this!)

When you get trained and knowledgeable and then achieve your certification, you can coach others with confidence that you know what you are doing.

However, there is no regulation for the coaching industry. It is possible for you to start your own coaching practice today with almost zero requirements. There are no laws that require certification in any of the 50 states nor are there in any country I am aware of. There may be other registration or taxation requirements as with any business so you need to check with your government agencies to be sure you comply.

Here is another coaching industry secret… there appears to be a covert system to help coaches get more clients. If a coaching organization tells you that you must hire a coach mentor who is already certified to work with you, you know you have entered the veiled brotherhood to make sure their coaches keep earning an income. Not every school does this, but it is quite common in the industry.

Here at PCCCA, there is no such requirement to hire a mentor coach. Coaching is actually included in the Premier CCLC training and it is an option with our other courses. We have it for you, IF and ONLY IF you want it.

I am a lifelong learner and I hope you are too.  If not, become one.  I have coaches who I consult with and if you want to be better at anything, it's a good idea.  I am constantly involved in some type of professional or personal improvement training to learn new techniques, strategies as well as pass these along to our students. Give me an opportunity to grow ... and I am in!

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth."  2 Timothy 2:15 NIV
