Promise of Hope Helps Your Clients Thrive
The first, usually unspoken reason a coach or counselor is hired, is to support the client in restoring hope about their situation. It's this simple promise of hope that grounds your clients and gives them confidence in themselves and the two of you as a team.
What is hope? The Free Dictionary defines hope as "The longing or desire for something accompanied by the belief in the possibility of its occurrence."
When there is hope, anything is possible. But when the client sees little or no hope, they may either deny their objective or become depressed.
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”
Proverbs 13:12 ESV
First, let’s look at why people lose hope.
Many people don’t have a good understanding about success. They see the end results but not the journey to get there. They are not aware that success is something we achieve after trial and error. We try. We fail. We learn from mistakes. We try again… Repeat until at last we succeed.
Others are under the mistaken belief they are too old, too young, too short, not pretty enough, too shy, too heavy … TOO SOMETHING or not enough of something. Fact is, we are all too much or too little of something for someone. But to others, we are just right. If we listen to those for whom we are not enough or too much, we begin to believe a lie that God’s purpose cannot be fulfilled, that somehow He made a mistake when He made us. Living this lie causes us to lose hope and defeats us. But restoring hope helps us thrive.
“Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.”
Proverbs 23:18 ESV
If we believe that life happens to us rather than as a result of our choices, we can lose hope. If we don’t make the right decision or ANY decision … the decision is made for us by the world and it's usually not one that we like.
Also, fear or unwillingness to step outside of our comfort zone can keep us stuck and certainly cause loss of hope. The good news is that comfort zones can be expanded and I teach how to do this in PCCCA programs.

With knowledge and faith, there is always hope. With God, there is never-ending hope. Our willingness to see the possibilities for our client, inspires hope.
We need to be watchful for self-defeating thinking patterns. It’s easier to claim lack of hope than it is to try harder. It’s cheaper to give up than invest in the right resources or training to achieve the goals.
Your keen observation skills as a coach or counselor will give you insight to peel away the layers of faulty thinking that led to the loss of hope.
